Your Real Hourly Rate on a Salary
A salary is quoted per year, but your time is spent per hour. If you work more than 40 hours a week, your real hourly pay is lower than the standard conversion says.
The standard conversion
Salary ÷ 2,080 gives the hourly rate for a 40-hour week over 52 weeks. A $65,000 salary works out to $31.25 an hour. That is the figure job sites and most calculators show, and it is right when you actually work 40 hours.
The real conversion
Divide the salary by the hours you actually work in a year instead:
Real hourly rate = salary ÷ (actual hours per week × 52)
The same $65,000 salary gives:
| Hours worked per week | Real hourly pay |
|---|---|
| 40 | $31.25 |
| 45 | $27.78 |
| 50 | $25.00 |
| 55 | $22.73 |
| 60 | $20.83 |
At 50 hours a week, a $65,000 salary pays the same per hour as a $25 hourly job, which would earn $52,000 for a 40-hour week and overtime on top for anything beyond.
Count all the hours
Include the hours the job takes, not only the hours at your desk:
- Email and messages answered in the evening or on weekends
- Required travel outside normal hours
- On-call periods where you must be reachable
- Work taken home before a deadline
A simple way to measure this: log your hours for two typical weeks and two busy weeks, then average them.
Why salaried workers do not get overtime
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, employees in executive, administrative and professional roles can be exempt from overtime if they meet a duties test and are paid a salary of at least $684 a week ($35,568 a year). That federal threshold has applied since 2020; a 2024 rule that would have raised it was vacated by federal courts. Several states, including California, New York and Washington, set higher thresholds.
Being paid a salary does not by itself make you exempt. If your duties do not meet the test, or your salary is below the threshold, you may be owed overtime. The overtime guide covers the basics, and the Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division handles complaints.
Using the real rate
Comparing offers. A $70,000 job with 45-hour weeks pays $29.91 per hour worked. A $66,000 job with 40-hour weeks pays $31.73. The lower salary pays more for your time.
Negotiating. If a role's hours are longer than standard, the real rate is a concrete way to show what the salary means. "At the hours this team works, this offer is about $25 an hour" is easier to discuss than "it feels low."
Side work. If you are pricing freelance work on the side, your salaried real rate is the floor for what your evening hours are worth to you. The freelance rate calculator adds the costs a freelancer carries.
Benefits change the picture
The real hourly rate measures cash only. Employer health insurance, retirement matching, paid leave and bonuses all add value. When comparing two salaried jobs, convert both to a real hourly rate, then list the benefits side by side.
Every salary page shows the real hourly rate at 40, 45, 50 and 55 hours a week.
